在XP下安装SQL Server 2000不能直接运行Autorun.exe来安装，可以分步安装，即先安装SQL的桌面引擎程序，再安装客户端程序，具体过程如下：
1.在SQL Server 2000的目录中找到MSDE这个目录(SQL的桌面引擎),点击setup.exe，安装结束重启。
2.然后运行SQL Server 2000目录下的Autorun.exe，安装过程中会有提示错误，只能安装客户端工具，继续安装完成。注意：在这一步经常会出现挂起的情况，这时需要重启机器，再进行安装，如果发现还有该错误，请按下面步骤：
2.1.打开注册表编辑器；
2.2.找到HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager项；
2.3.在右边窗口中删除PendingFileRenameOperations项；
2.4.重启后继续安装。
如果还有同样问题，检查其它注册表项中是否有该值存在，如有则删掉。
3.安装完成，打开企业管理器,展开(local)实例，若为空，则新建一个。
4.打开查询分析器，试用sa用户登录，看是不是发现SA用户登录失败，如果失败则说明还没有与信任SQL Server连接相关联，这时需要打开注册表编辑器，找到[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\MSSQLSERVER\MSSQLSERVER]项，修改键值LoginMode，默认值是1，现在将其值改为2，重启。
5.再打开查询分析器，用sa用户登录，成功。
安装MSDE时出现“The instance name specified is invalid”的解决办法：
下面是Microsoft官方给出的说明：
If an earlier version of SQL Server, including MSDE 1.0 or SQL Server 7.0, is already running, you receive the following error message when you try to install SQL Server Desktop Engine.
The instance name specified is invalid.
SQL Server Desktop Engine is designed to run side-by-side with another instance of SQL Server. When it is running on a computer that is running MSDE 1.0 (from Access 2000) or SQL Server 7.0, SQL Server Desktop Engine requires an instance name or a TCP/IP port (or both) to be specified. The instance name allows client application to talk to one particular version of SQL Server when multiple versions are installed. However, instance names are not supported with Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.5 clients. Instead you must use the traditional method of specifying a particular TCP/IP port.
The following example runs the Setup program from the drive R (CD-ROM) and specifies an instance name of "MSOFFICE." Be sure that INSTANCENAME is in all caps and has no spaces.
R:\MSDE2000\Setup.exe INSTANCENAME=MSOFFICE
This allows SQL Server Desktop Engine to co-exist with earlier versions of SQL Server; however, users who have MDAC 2.5 installed may not be able to access the server. When SQL Server Desktop Engine is installed with an instance name, the TCP/IP port that SQL Server Desktop Engine listens on is dynamically allocated. Computers with MDAC 2.6 installed are able to identify a server by its ServerName\InstanceName. However, MDAC 2.5 clients do not recognize the InstanceName; instead, they try to find the server on the standard TCP/IP port 1433. Because the port was dynamically assigned, it cannot be guaranteed that port 1433 was assigned to SQL Server Desktop Engine.
可以看出是版本冲突引起的，这时就要在DOS命令行中用命令“R:\MSDE2000\Setup.exe INSTANCENAME=MSOFFICE” 进行安装。
